Captain Hastings is staying at Styles Court in Essex, England. He is recovering from war wounds and was invited to stay with his longtime friends, the Cavendish family. John Cavendish was a good friend of his and he quickly learned that John's mother has married a much younger man, Mr. Inglethorpe. When Emily Cavendish Inglethorpe is poisoned, the guilt points to her husband.

Family members consist of John, Lawrence and Mary. There are house staff people, friends and of course, her husband. Themes of infidelity and greed surface in this book. How and why is Emily poisoned - that is the question. If you haven't had the pleasure of this story, you may be surprised.

Hasting's good friend, Hercule Poirot, is present. What a wonderful thing that he is there! No one solves a crime like this Belgium wonder of a man. His power of deduction is superb.

What an absolute treat to hear this story. I never tire of the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, whether it is book format or audio. This was the first story that introduced Hercule Poirot. Even in her early endeavors, she was a master with red herrings.

The reader is Hugh Fraser, who is known for his portrayal of Captain Hastings in Poirot films. He does an exemplary job.
