The Kleinfeldts had been disliked because of their hyper-religiousness. Father Newberry had been dozing in his recliner because Sister Ignatius had made meat loaf for dinner again and the stomach acid would not let him rest. So he looked out the window at 5 AM, saw the Kleinfeldt's car, went into the church, and found the elderly couple, carefully arranged in pews, shot in the head and with crosses carved into their torsos. Sheriff Michael Halloran and his deputy, Bonar Carlson, arrive in the small Wisconsin Church, and are told by the priest that the dead couple had been worth $7 million dollars, all of which they left ot his church.

Meanwhile, a little later, the body of a jogger is found by a river in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The next day, a carefully arranged body of a young woman is found draped over the statue of an angel in the cemetery. A serial killer is loose in Minneapolis

Grace McBride, Annie Belinsky, Harley Davidson, Roadrunner, and Mitch make up MONKEEWRENCH. A company that designs educational computer games . But this time, they are devising a game called Serial Killer Detective, a many layered game in which each level must be solved before the next one is attained. In the first level, a jogger is murdered and his body is found by the riverbank. In the second level, a body is found draped over a statue in the cemetery. In the third level, a body is found on a riverboat. Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth must try to prevent that third murder.

The game is only at the beta stage so there are fewer than 600 people playing and they have only reached a limited number of steps, so even though there are 20 murders in the game, the programmers are sure that the killer only know the first seven. Meanwhile, the detectives find that the members of Monkeewrench have a history that only goes back ten years, and the champion hacker of the MPD cannot break through the firewalls that have been set up

This is a first novel from a mother - daughter team. They have developed several intriguing characters and have written a fast paced thriller. I hope to read more from this pair.
