What is a lawyer supposed to do?

That is the question Mary DiNunzio is asking herself after agreeing to represent Jack Newley, an estates attorney from a prominent Philadelphia firm. Her client wants to plead guilty for the stabbing murder of his wife, Honor Buxton Newley. He already confessed to the police, his wife’s blood is all over his clothes and his fingerprints are on the knife. So, what is the problem?

He did not do it.

Jack has an idea who killed his wife and does not want that person to ruin their life. He did everything necessary to frame himself and has no qualms in serving time. The police and the district attorney believe that they have an open and shut case, but Mary, naïve as she might be in some things is not easily convinced. She and her best friend, Judy Carrier, are baffled as to why Jack will go to extremes to protect a murderer? At 432 pages, you can be sure there is more to the story that meets the eye.

The action, suspense and humor one expects from a Scottoline novel are present in this book. If the book ended as readers expected you will have a very short book and the entertainment value would be nil. Strong themes of friendship, loyalty and honor (no pun intended) are present throughout the book. Though a big novel it is a quick read. Simple and somewhat straightforward, a good escape after a hard day.
