Aside from the cases of the celebrated Hercule Poirot and Ms. Marple, Agatha Christie wrote several mysteries featuring the husband and wife team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. They were first introduced in THE SECRET ADVERSARY published in 1929. They were a young loving couple that went from rags-to-riches in a day and enjoy sharing a great adventure. On occasions they would stumble unto a murder case and they would have to use their wits to solve the case. This crime-fighting couple always new how to have fun as seen throughout their short stories and their five novels. BY THE PRICKING OF MY THUMBS is one of their best-known novels.

First published in 1968, this novel shows Christie at what can be expected from the Grand Dame of Mystery. The Beresfords are forty years older than they were during their first appearance and they were still going on strong. A suspicious death at a nursing home, a mysterious painting and an antique desk leads Tommy and Tuppence to an old case involving several missing children. The title of the book was taking from a line of Shakespeare in MacBeth. “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes”. Once you realize where the nature of that evil comes from you will see why Christie is considered a master of the game.

Samantha Bond, best known for playing Ms. Moneypenny in the Pierce Brosnan James Bond films, reads the abridged audio book and does an excellent job of it. She gets inside the skin of everyone of her characters giving them life that you could not appreciate from reading the book. Her depiction of true evil is chilling once the guilty party is revealed, showing how true evil can be hidden inside of innocence. BY THE PRICKING OF MY THUMBS is a great book read by a great actress. It is the best of both worlds.
