Talented Maine cop, Zoe West is on a fast track to the FBI academy and an effective career in law enforcement. The murder of her father, Police Chief for the little town on the coast of Maine where she grew up, shatters her so completely she spirals out of control, abandons plans for the academy and eventually gets out of law enforcement altogether. Her emotional bereavement over the loss of her father-whose murder is still not solved as the book opens-continues for a very long time. Why no one among her family and close friends didn't press her into counseling is an open question. Her younger sister, on the other hand, stood up and got on with her life.

To town comes FBI agent J. B. McGrath with family links to the place. He avoids mentioning the family links for a long time, motivation unclear. This thread is spun out for a large part of the book and then revealed to Zoe in a very casual, off-hand manner. But that's consistent with the many motivations of other characters in the book including the murderer.

Mira Books is known for it's Romance and Romantic Suspense. This novel has a little of both, but not enough of either. Interestingly, the scenes of erotic tension and sexual activity are easily the best in the book. The two characters abruptly develop real tension and dimension, aspects often missing in other scenes, and in other characters.

There are several marvelous characters in this book, unique, odd, tempting, but their potential is never quite developed. The setup is excellent and for the most part the writing is well-done. But the story is not sufficient to carry the weight of so many words.
