CHILL FACTOR is the seventh book in the series that started with THE PICASSO SCAM, and is the only one still in print. Charlie Priest is an unusual copper. For one thing, he's an art school graduate, a relic of the '60s who was one of the youngest Detective Inspectors in Yorkshire, but many years later, he is still a DI, mainly because he prefers to stay in the field. His superiors recognize his maverick tendencies but honor his instincts.

A woman is found raped and murdered in her bedroom. Her husband is found in the house of a man known to both of them. The other man is dead. A knife in his heart. And Tony Silkstone, husband of the murdered woman, confesses to the murder claiming he came upon Peter Latham murdering Mrs. Silkstone. Tony followed Peter home, killed him and called the police.

The upper echelons of the Heckley force, and the larger Yorkshire police force, are all for closing the case then and there. After all, Silkstone is sitting in a chair, next to a corpse, and claiming responsibility for the crime. But Charlie isn't sure and he continues to investigate, finally linking this murder with an older unsolved crime in a different part of England.

Charlie, unlike Rebus, is not a loner but he does live alone. He breaks rules and frequently ignores orders, but he is well respected by the members of his teams and the bosses. He gets the job done, and in the end, that's what really counts.

Stuart Pawson is a much underrated author, both in his own country and in the US. All his previous books are out of print. It would be worth while to search for them because Pawson writes with a dry wit and an elegant use of language. Perhaps too elegant for the average reader. Look for the other books in the series and judge for yourself. Perhaps his publisher will see fit to reissue the backlist.
