Another in Jance's excellent Joanna Brady series. This is a fine book with a large cast of characters, all of whom are distinct and interesting. Teen-ager, Brianna O'Brien, daughter of a wealthy and powerful Cochise County resident is missing. After her body is discovered in remote Skeleton Canyon, her teen-aged lover, Ignacio Ybarra is accused of the crime, in spite of a lack of hard evidence. The more Sheriff Brady investigates the crime, the more questions arise. The probe begins to reveal unrelated activities that also need investigation.

Soon, Brady's small force is stretched to its limit. Strong characters and narrative voice are expected in Jance's books and this one does not disappoint. In a complex book with several exciting layers, readers will have to pay attention. Conflicting motives from several characters continually raise disturbing questions, but Jance neatly ties up the various plots in a believable way. Mystery and crime fiction readers will find this one worthwhile, although at least one character is resolved in a way that was a little too facile for my taste.
