The annual New York City St. Patrick's day celebrations fell on a Sunday, so Christine Bennett, ex-Franciscan nun and her detective boyfriend, Jack, planned to spend the whole day with friends. Jack and the other men, Detective Ray Hansen and Scotty McVeigh, still a uniformed police officer will march in the parade, while Chris, Jean McVeigh and the 2 children, and Ray's girlfriend, Petra watch. Then they plan to spend some time at the Emerald Society party on a pier on the Hudson river and finally

they are to go to Petra's apartment in Brooklyn for dinner.

After dinner, Chris, Jack, Scotty and Jean go to a bar on Scotty's beat. The two couples leave and the women wait for the men to bring the cars. A shot is heard. Scotty has been killed.

Chris is worried that the killer may have been after Jack because he had driven Scotty's BMW from Petra's apartment to the bar. But Jean can't find Scotty's papers. Both his birth certificate and his army discharge papers are missing. He seems to have reinvented himself when he joined the police force, and it is further discovered that several other off duty policemen have also been killed. Ray is arrested for the murder but, even though Chris dislikes him, she agrees to help find the real killer.

This is the first in Lee Harris' holiday series that I have read. I decided to try it after having read the first book in her new series MURDER IN HELL'S KITCHEN. I don't know which series I like better. I'll have to continue to read the books in both series until I decide.
