After having won the Edgar Award for LINE OF VISION, his first mystery novel, David Ellis returns with a brand new courtroom thriller. Just as in the first novel, the narrator of the tale has a dubious background making readers question everything. Is he telling us the truth or is he just spinning us a tale? Trying to figure it out is one of the main appeals of the story.

The story is told in Jon Soliday’s point of view. He is a lawyer and political advisor to Grant Tully, a childhood friend running for his party’s nomination in the California gubernatorial primaries. With only a short time before the primaries events are being conspired against them. One of Tully’s aides shoots a burglar inside his own home and now an old death is coming back to haunt them. Many years ago, when Soliday was a juvenile, he was suspected of the rape and death of Gina Mason. He claims that he had consensual relations with her, but when he left the room she was still alive. It was the next day that she was found dead. The case was forced to close due to lack of evidence and since he was still a child when it happened, the court records have been sealed. Now, somebody is trying to bring the case back to light and sparing no expense to do it. Could it be the political opposition or is there something more sinister at work?

LIFE SENTENCE is a carefully plotted revenge story and courtroom drama. The narrator brings in a lot of questions to the tale he is telling affecting the credibility to the readers. It is not until one reaches the final chapters that things are revealed leaving us in a state of shellshock. Just when you thought you figured it out, there is a major plot twist. Expect the unexpected when reading this book. You might just like what you find.
