Hometown culinary queen Constance Buckridge returns to St. Paul on a triumphal tour, and perhaps to search for a place to open yet another cooking school to add to her empire. Of course, she and her entourage, stepson Paul, son Nathan, daughter Emily, son-in-law Kenny Merlin, and brother, Arthur Jadek are all staying at Sophie Greenway's posh Maxfield Plaza hotel.

Sophie is still adjusting to her ownership of the hotel. Her parents had declared their retirement several months earlier and left the management of the institution to their daughter, who has also been part-time restaurant critic for the local newspaper.

Sophie and her handsome radio personality husband, Bram Baldric decide to go out for dinner one night and they go to the restaurant at the Belmont Hotel, owned by Harry Hongist, a long time friend of Sophie's parents. They are shocked at the appearance of the place and the quality of the food. George Gildemeister, the restaurant critic for the Times Register had given the Belmont two bad reviews, and Harry was distraught.

George retires and Sophie is offered his position. When George turns up dead, Harry is suspected immediately.

Meanwhile, an unauthorized biography of Constance is in the works. Buckridge is terrified that if it is published, she will be ruined. Someone in her organization is feeding Marie Damontraville, the author, inside information. In order to clear Harry of the murder, Sophie must investigate Constance's past, and at the same time, look into her own past relationship with Nathan.

If you are a fan of the cozy mystery, Ellen Hart should be on your must read list. I do prefer her Jane Lawless series but I am willing to give Sophie and Bram another chance.
