In his ever-growing backlist of financial thrillers, Stephen Frey writes a new novel regarding unsavory practices in the banking industry. Angela Day is an up-and-coming Vice President at Sumter Bank in North Carolina. A reclusive multi-billionaire has requested her official services and she is flown to his Wyoming hideaway. Jake Lawrence is a very private individual. Few people, including his employees, can actually claim to have met their employer face-to-face. Tabloids are offering a million dollars for a confirmed photograph of this elusive individual and governments are looking to kill him for his money. He is interested in making a major acquisition and believes that Angela fills the necessary requirements to fulfill the task. Should she be successful, Lawrence will use his influence and power to the one thing she wants most – sole custody of her six-year-old son, Hunter. She will do whatever it takes as long as it is not illegal; this is too important for her to fail.

The book starts a bit slow where the main focus is on Angela. Her past plays an important role in the story that is not clear until further on in the novel. There are several surprises and unexpected plot twists that make this a quick and intense thrill ride. Frey also uses his work as a forum. There is a subplot involving illegal business practices regarding home loan applications. He stereotypes some of these unscrupulous individuals, but in some stereotypes, there is always a hint of truth. The ending is a bit melodramatic, but it works well in the book. If you are looking for a good escape, this one fits the bill. SILENT PARTNER works well as a suspense novel and as a head’s up for his readers. Reading performs to major functions – learning and entertainment. The author fulfills both.
