Tobias Wells and Lavinia Lake, private investigators and lovers, are on the trail of a murderer for hire who is a copy cat for a previous murderer who left behind as a memento mori rings at the scene of the crimes. A memento ring turns up at the doorstep of Apasia Gray who asks March to find its threatening source. There is a murder at the country estate of Lord Beaumont. Tobias and Lavinia launch into an investigation which must unmask the murderer and end his career. There is no lack of suspects including several dowagers. This is a delightful and suspenseful romp in the Regency world with a wealth of humor; much research into the customs and manners of the times,; and a sense of the macabre. The interplay between the characters is a joy to observe. This is a fast paced, superbly plotted story very well narrated by Jennafer VanDyck.
