THE INVOKER is the second book in Jon F. Merz's Lawson Vampire Series. Lawson

is a Fixer; he kills other vampires that threaten the Balance. For example, he kills drug dealers and others who threaten the balance between invisibility within the human society and attention. Like the military, vampires govern and punish their own. Merz's vampires have the ability to exist within normal society and remain unnoticeable except for the fact they still need to drink blood. Blood can be purchased; not taken from unsuspecting innocent people. Lawson is sent to kill Watterson, who is reportably a drug trafficker. This is a quick and easy assignment, in which Lawson is successful; unfortunately there is a slight problem. Watterson proclaims his innocence and requests that Lawson protect his son. The doubt Watterson's dying words creates, causes Lawson to check on the son and arrives in time to save him from assassins with wood tipped bullets ? the weapon of a Fixer and something only vampires carry. The entire situation is a set up and Lawson must protect Jack from unknown enemies who want his power. Jack is an "invoker," which means he has the ability to call forth those from the spirit world to the real world. This power is both rare and can be very dangerous when used for evil. Lawson will risk his life and the lives of his friends in order to protect Jack from those out to destroy the world.

Merz has created a vampire world that mirrors the checks and balances that exist in the mortal world: there's a governing body, there are social mores and there is a form of control. His characters are interesting in how they fit within the larger world. Rather than create a society that is full of individuals; Merz's has created a group of individuals that must function as a unified unit. It is interesting that the only real difference between humans and vampires is human's mortality. Yes, vampires drink blood; however, they behave and believe much as humans do. Excluding physiological difference, humans and vampires have the same personality traits, both the positive and the negative.

THE INVOKER is a fast paced book that satisfies most requirements a fan of vampire novels could have. The Lawson series is a series to look out for in the future. The characters' voices will keep the reader searching for more.
