Lucy Stone, wife, mother, reporter and amateur sleuth of Tinker's Cove Maine is once again up to her eyeballs in murder. The denizens of Tinker's Cove must be quite relieved that Lucy is taking a trip to Boston the week before Father's Day to attend a newspaper convention. They surely should feel that with Lucy gone, the heavy hand of homicide will not fall once again on their small community.

The first people she meets at the hotel are the Read family, owners of a chain of newspapers in New England who also happen to have a summer place in Tinker's Cove. In fact, her oldest daughter has been hired as a "mother's helper" for Luther Read, Jr.'s little boy while the family is in Maine.

The big news is that the Read family is going to sell their chain to a huge conglomerate, but before the banquet, Lucy mistakenly goes into a room in the midst of a big family squabble. Luther, Sr. has decided not to sell his papers to the consternation and anger of the rest of the family. When the elder Read is poisoned at the banquet, it is certainly no surprise to the reader.

In spite of her boss, Tim's order to stay away from the case, Lucy decides to find out more about the murder including the many motives and suspects in the death. Luther Read, Sr. may have been a popular and benign presence in Tinker's Cove, but he is a good businessman and a rather ruthless womanizer. Lucy is also certain that Luther, Jr., who has been arrested is not the killer of his father.

A very readable traditional mystery with the Boston setting giving somewhat of a different flavor to the series. Lucy, while trying to solve the murder, is also worried about all the troubles back home including the tension between her husband and son, her daughter's seeming lack of responsibility and the family dog has once again gotten into trouble.

FATHER'S DAY MURDER has some interesting background on small newspapers that seem to be fast disappearing. This is an almost ideal way to pass the time for those who prefer the traditional on the somewhat cozy side.
