Paris is the city of love and a great place to vacation. And Paula was back again. Too bad she didn't have any of the warm cozy feelings about the city most people get when they think of "love" and "vacation". To her, it is simply the city where her brother, Eric, was murdered nine months ago in a car bombing. That was bad enough, but on top of that, the antiquarian diary he had purchased for their grandfather just before his death was now missing. Both the police and Luc Dupré, the private investigator she hired, keep telling her that the diary was destroyed in the car bombing. Something just won't let her believe it. Maybe it's simply because she wants so badly for it to still exist. Her grandfather had taken out a loan to buy the diary. A loan for a half million dollars! With no diary to resell, there is no way to pay back the loan and bankruptcy looks certain.

Who and what are behind the strange postcards and mysterious phone calls that drew her back to Paris this time? Now that she is in Paris, why is everyone trying to get her to go back home to Canada?  But she must find out if the diary still exists and if it does, she must somehow regain possession of it for her grandfather's sake. But whom can she trust to help her? She has good reason to mistrust everyone who says they are trying to help her. Now she's even beginning to believe she is being followed. But why would anyone want to follow her? Does someone think she knows more than she really does? Or, do they want to make sure she doesn't get close to finding the diary? The pieces to the puzzle are there, somewhere, she just has to find them. Then, of course, she has to put them together correctly. Then she can get the diary back. Sounds easy enough - if she can just stay alive.

This story is filled with suspense and intrigue, plot and subplots. It is a great brainteaser. You know you should be able to figure it out, but somehow the solution is always just around the corner. You know you will be able to uncover the truth if only you read one more page, maybe just one more page, and one more page, and one more...
