In 1963 Lieutenant James N. Rowe was a Green Beret on assignment as an American advisor to a village of anti-communist South Vietnamese. He was sent out on a mission that he felt was an unreasonably dangerous and as a result he and two other Green Berets were captured.

Rowe spent five long years in captivity where he was usually with other American POWs; however, at the end he was all alone with just his guards. The Viet Cong who had captured him were constantly moving their prisoners from camp to camp. During his imprisonment he  watched some of his fellow prisoners die and others be released. Rowe himself was very ill at times. After several attempts and five long years he successfully escaped and returned to freedom.

Without over dramatization the author shared the pain, hunger, terror and sadness of the POW. The hardback book was written and released in 1971 which was not many years after his return to the free world. Sadly after surviving such an experience, according to the notes about the author on the CD case, Rowe was assassinated by Philippine insurgents on April 29, 1989.

Reathel Bean, an excellent narrator, was able to capture the courage and sincerity of the memoir and in turn share it with listener. His voice and presentation was consistent with the age and viewpoint of the author.
