Charlotte LaRue has plenty of things to think about as she runs her successful Maid-for-a-Day house-cleaning service in New Orleans, but nothing seems as overwhelming as her fast-approaching 60th birthday. In fact, it's thrown Charlotte into a blue funk, and various physical problems haven't done anything to brighten her mood.

But when Charlotte and her band of merry maids invade the old Devilier house, which has been converted into a series of luxury apartments, intent on cleaning up the place, the crusty lady finds something else to think aboutŠ.like a dead body in a closet.

Turns out the body is that of shady real estate agent Drew Bergeron, who was believed killed in an airplane crash years earlier, and Charlotte was among the many who turned out for his funeral. Things turn even more complicated when Charlotte finds out client Marian Herbert's husband was involved in a business deal with the real estate agent that went badŠshortly thereafter Marian's husband died in a suspicious accident and Bergeron was believed killed in a small plane crash. Now Marian is battling alcoholism and her two children also don't seem to be coping very well in the aftermath of their father's death.

While confronting worries about her own health, Charlotte tries to piece together a trail of complicated relationships and events which stretch back to the days preceding the two "deaths," and tries to figure out why the "dead man" came back to life, if only for a short time. The irascible Charlotte knows she has to look into Bergeron's murder, not so much because she cares who killed a man who, by all accounts, deserved to die, but because she needs to find out the truth for the sake of Marian and her two sons. This is the second Charlotte LaRue mystery by the New Orleans author.
