Dr. Kevin Kincaid is on the verge of a medical breakthrough with genes. He has developed a vector that will enable scientists to eradicate a wide range of genetic defects. However, others see more sinister uses for this technology and Kincaid soon finds himself drawn into a far-reaching conspiracy.

GERMLINE started very well and was quickly an exciting and interesting tale. However, Erlick soon seemed to become bogged down by scientific detail. Of course, in a book that deals with something as complicated as gene therapy, a certain level of scientific detail is necessary. However, at points, the book felt more like a science lesson than a thriller. For someone such as me, who has no scientific knowledge, it becomes a complicated distraction from the plot.

Nevertheless, the book will keep the reader's attention, as Erlick continues to increase the danger levels and throw more and more surprises at the reader. Some of the plot developments towards the end of the novel will stretch the bounds of credulity, but at the end of the day, GERMLINE could easily have been written with a Hollywood script in mind. It is a mix of action and science, with an engaging main character. It is not flawless by any means, but fans of medical conspiracies that appear the novels of Robin Cook and Michael Palmer, for example, should find themselves at home here.
