Carolyn Blue's mother-in-law was in jail. What a surprise when Carolyn and Jason came to San Francisco. They had not planned on visiting a jail cell as one of the sites to see.

Vera Blue is booked for murder. She is a cantankerous feminist, ready to reorganize the jail from the inside with her brand of social justice. Vera is busy with reorganization work for her fellow prisoners and the jail guards. Quite the feisty prisoner!

This story harbors many peculiar characters, some of whom are nearly over the top. Two people that caught my eye are Mr. Valetti and Sam Flamboise. Mr. Valetti is Vera's apartment landlord. He is in love with Vera, would like to marry her and sings tenor opera at a variety of situations. Sam is the PI that Vera's ex-husband hires. A former football player, he also shares in telling this story as do Carolyn and her husband, Jason. Circumstances find Carolyn on the back of Sam's motorcycle as they search for clues. It shows what this adventurous woman will do for the sake of solving the case and getting a mother-in-law out of jail.

With ten recipes included, this installment is the 4th in the Carolyn Blue series.
