A Vietnamese fisherman, Vinh Tien, whose son and pregnant girlfriend were killed when their boat sunk during a storm, has reason to believe that their deaths were no accident. Tien goes to private investigator, Wil Hardesty for help. Sounds easy enough, but it is not. This case will remind Hardesty that he knows all about hardship and loss. Wil fought in Viet Nam. Like Mr. Tien, Wil lost his son to the ocean and eventually his wife, Lisa, divorced him. Taking this case will bring back all of the ghosts that haunt Hardesty and lead him into the shadowy world of Asian gangs and a story involving two brothers, much like Cain and Abel.

I was delighted to read the ARC of BURNING MOON. I have read all four of the previous Wil Hardesty novels by the Shamus Award winning author, Richard Barre and it is a delight to have both Hardesty and Barre back. Barre has made Hardesty an unforgettable character. He is gritty, emotional and real. But Barre does not stop there. His character development is first rate. All the characters he presents are complex and he has richly colored histories for every one of them. Barrešs descriptions are sharp and precise. He conveys easily the intimate feel and sound of California. Every author has what I call a unique writing rhythm. It took me a few chapters before I was caught up in the rhythm of BURNING MOON, but once I was it was a gritty and gripping action packed romp to the end. The plot was in constant motion and once past the first few chapters, I had few opportunities to come up for air. Drama, conflict, interesting characters, good dialogue ... Richard Barre and Wil Hardesty are back.
