DEATH TIDIES UP by Barbara Colley is a entertaining second episode in the Charlotte LaRue mystery series. Charlotte, fast approaching her 60th birthday, is still running her cleaning business in New Orleans' Garden District. For those of you who like to read in order, I do recommend MAID FOR MURDER, the first in the series.

One of her clients, Marian, is a widow, who blames most of her misery on her husband's friend, Drew. who almost brought her husband's firm to bankruptcy. He then disappeared in the crash of his small plane over the water. She is also having problems with her older son as well as with her reliance on the bottle. Although she has been able to keep her husband's firm going after his death, she is ready for a meltdown.

When the Maid-for-a-Day crew is cleaning a new apartment building, which Charlotte has committed to before she discovered the reputation of the contractor, one of her employees finds the murdered body of the supposedly dead-for-two-years scoundrel.

Charlotte once again finds herself "helping" the police in the persons of her niece and her partner, the about-to-retire Lou who is also Charlotte's tenant. She thought she had learned not to get too involved with her clients' personal lives, but the lessons didn't stick.

It is nice to have a mature heroine as Charlotte faces her 60th birthday with some apprehension, who is a vital member of society and may even have sparked some romantic interest with Lou. Fast-paced and breezy, DEATH TIDIES UP is an enjoyable way to pass a few hours in what is a very promising new series. --
