A HOT AND SULTRY NIGHT FOR CRIME is a compilation of various talented and popular modern authors. The list of authors includes those firmly established in the genre and some up and coming authors. The authors include Jeffery Deaver, Dave Handler, Loren D. Estleman, John Lutz, Jeremiah Healy and Sinclair Browning, as well as up-and-coming Tim Myers and his like.

As with any collection of works, some of the short stories are much stronger than others; however, for the most part, the stories contained in this book were good. Having stories that are mostly good is difficult to achieve and is praiseworthy when it occurs. It is especially hard when writing a good novel and writing a good short story involve different writing skills and abilities. It takes a very talented author to successfully do them both. The stories are varied in their crimes and characters; however, all have the theme of heat and passion (for something) involved.

A HOT AND SULTRY NIGHT FOR CRIME allows authors the chance to vary their talents and create different niches for their work. Regardless of a writer’s role within the genre, being included in a collection of stories always him or her a chance to gain a larger reading audience. For example, a reader that is not a big fan of thrillers might not pick up Deaver’s work and disregard the short but enjoyable “Ninety-Eight Point Six” that begins the book. Another well-written story is that of Jeremiah Healy. In “The Slow Blink” Healy takes the opportunity to introduce a new character and new opinions and views.

A HOT AND SULTRY NIGHT FOR CRIME is a great book that can either be read straight through or a story at a time. This book has something that just about every mystery fan will appreciate, be it hardboiled detectives or a thief simply outwitting the cops. This compilation also provides the opportunity to see how well a favorite author writes. If searching for a book to provide new authors, or to see what your favorite author is up to, or are simply a fan of short stories, A HOT AND SULTRY NIGHT FOR CRIME is a must read.
