A strange nondescript man injects "stuff" into artist Dylan O'Connor and stand up comic Jillian Jackson in an Arizona motel. He warns each of them that "they" will be after them and immediate flight is the best course of action. Dylan organizes his autistic younger brother Shep and heads for his van in the parking lot, where they meet Jillian, whose vintage automobile has been torched, with what appears to be the mad doctor in the driver's seat.

They flee and soon Jillian starts having visions, Dylan's empathy, which has become enhanced over the years of caring for Shep, needs to help people in distress. All he has to do is touch something the other person has recently touched to feel the need, and Shep goes "here-there"

The book is an extended chase back and forth between Arizona and California, with Dylan and Jillian learning to trust each other and to use their new powers. Stephen Lang's reading of the story adds an extra dimension. He is particularly touching when reading Shep's monotonously repetitious phrases. One can almost hear Shep beneath all other conversations. I have never read of listened to any of Koontz' books but I really enjoyed this one. It is an audio book worth searching out, as it will make hours of driving pass by quickly.
