BRAIN DEAD author Eileen Dreyer has come up with another great medical thriller. Maggie O'Brien is the sort of overachiever one has come to expect of male thriller heroes. She works as a trauma nurse in the ED of a large urban St. Louis hospital, holds a second job as Paramedic on a Fire Department emergency medical team, and is the medic on a City/County SWAT team. But she is still a big disappointment to her abusive father, ex-cop Tommy O'Brien because she didn't become a policeman.

One of her first calls as a member of the newly formed SWAT team is to a hostage situation. A mentally disturbed man, Montana Bob, who is sure that little green men are after him, is holding a policeman, Sean Delaney, hostage. Delaney has been shot in the leg and the sharpshooters are ready to take the man out but Maggie knows him and talks him down. He is barely injured but he inexplicably dies in hospital.

Maggie investigates and finds that there have been several unexplained deaths. There's a list on the wall of the nurses' lounge of people who would not be missed and it appears that several of them have died. Some of the names were mumbled by Montana Bob but his murmuring were dismissed as symptoms of his illness. Among the names are gangbangers and an abusive priest. All of whom died after being admitted to various hospitals in and around St. Louis for relatively minor complaints. Despite warning from above, Maggie investigates.

WITH A VENGEANCE is a fast moving thriller with a female protagonist. Mggie believes she can do it all, so she does. Montana Bob used to bring her flowers every month, and Maggie feels she owes him something, so instead of obeying her superiors and letting it drop, she investigates and find s the unifying purpose behind the murders, and, incidentally, eliminates her father's hold on her.
