In tiny rural Pine County, Minnesota the Sheriff's Department usually knows all of the wrongdoers. Imagine the surprise of Undersheriff Dan Williams, the Chief Investigator for the Sheriff's Department, when he is called to investigate a missing person call and discovers that the missing woman is a prostitute. Dan and his deputies were completely unaware of a prostitute working out of the Sturgeon Lake trailer park. Upon learning that Jeannie was entertaining most of the local businessmen, and a state senator, Dan knows this is a can of worms.

Because of the copious amounts of blood found in the premises, Dan is treating the case as a homicide. As he tracks down Jeannie's customers, he meets reluctance from many of the men to admit their involvement with her. But when he attempts to approach the state senator he is met not only with stonewalling, but also with threats.

The novel is a police procedural lover's dream. Hovey depicts the days in the deputies' schedule with accuracy but also with interest. While the big shots in St. Paul put down their efforts as being naïve, Dan and his team are not as unsophisticated as their detractors would have believed. Doggedly pursuing the slim leads that he has, Dan not only solves a murder but also uncovers a major road building scam.

The author has all the facts and delivers them to the reader. The plot is well developed and the pacing is fast. This is definitely a book to read in one sitting.
