Ramon Willis is innocent of the murder that sent him to Death Row. However, he soon discovers that there is something worse than death, and that is the new forms of germ warfare being developed by the US military and tested on the public. Can he save himself?

LIVING PROOF’ is an interesting novel and a powerful debut for Thompson. He takes the usual conspiracy theories propagated by shows such as ‘The X Files’ and increases the tension by turning the medical experiments into a game of cat and mouse. His main character, Ramon Willis, is very human and Thompson is careful to point out that although Willis is innocent of murder, he is guilty of other crimes, making a change from a whiter than white character.

Unfortunately, however, LIVING PROOF’ does fall into the trap of predictability, with some of the twists becoming obvious. Thompson also left some rather large plot strands floating, without conclusion, leaving the reader confused as to the final fate of some characters involved in the story. Whether this was an oversight or a deliberate idea to add to the idea of a conspiracy is not clear.

Nevertheless, LIVING PROOF’ is an enjoyable thriller and a good first novel. With his second novel, Peter J. Thompson can only improve.
