Tom Langdon, erstwhile war reporter is now earning his living by writing silly articles for women's magazines. It's Christmas and he wants to get to LA so he can go on a ski trip with his current girlfriend, a woman who makes a very good living dubbing the voices of cartoon characters, but he can't fly across country. He's been banned from flying in the US for a year because he took umbrage at one of the ridiculous "security" searches at an airport. He's going to write a story about the trip. Along the way, he meets several characters, also travelling across the country, as well as a famous movie director and his entourage. Included in this latter group is Eleanor, his ex-girlfriend, a woman he has never forgotten. Tim Matheson is the reader on this unabridged audio recording. He should have been a good choice for narrator, since he has done lots of voice-overs for cartoon characters on television, as well as playing the vice-president in WEST WING and a TV anchor on BREAKING NEWS, but at times, his narration is a bit stiff. He does a good job of reading dialog, and in giving the different characters individual accents and intonations, but his reading of expository elements of the story could have been improved upon. On the whole, however, this is a good, if not exciting, audio book
