Acclaimed author Michael Connelly, who gave readers an LA homicide detective named Hironymous Bosch, has now stepped it up a notch or two with this fine thriller. Retired FBI profiler Terrell McCaleb has a new heart and improved life prospects, thanks to a robbery and murder at a small Los Angeles market. McCaleb wants to be left alone. He's recovering from his heart replacement operation, he's making progress repairing his dad's boat, and he can see peace and contentment just over the horizon in the form of Catalina Island where he spent his youth. It's a pretty stress-free environment.

Trouble and big-time stress arrive in the person of the sister of the woman whose heart now lives in McCaleb's chest. She wants answers. She wants to know who killed her sister and why. When McCaleb reluctantly agrees to try to help, he immediately comes into conflict with the FBI, the Los Angeles police, the county Sheriff's department and his doctor.

One of the more fascinating elements of this well-written novel is watching the way McCaleb, ex-FBI, uses his experience and his knowledge to acquire vital information from sources which, in the past, he would have had easy access to by virtue of his badge of authority. Blood Work is an outstanding novel of its type, with several surprises, an unusual premise and sympathetic characters in whom our interest will continue.
