A string of minor burglaries have afflicted rural Nation county in Iowa. Farms used only during the warmer months have been broken into and the Sheriff really would like to solve the crimes before the snowbirds return. There seems to be a break in the case when a not-to-bright young man is apprehended on a road leading to one of those farms. He left his cousins on that road two days earlier and they never returned to the meeting point after having breaking in to the farm. Deputy Carl Houseman investigates and finds two "corpse-sicles" in the shed.

When the sheriff's office contacts the owner of the farm who is wintering in Florida, they find that he is already on his way to Iowa and will be landing within the hour. What follows is the solution to some of the crimes committed by home grown terrorists, the neo-nazi anti-government anti-semitic survivalists in the book immediately preceding this one KNOWN DEAD.

Harstad puts his almost 3 decades of service as a law enforcement officer in rural Iowa to good use writing about a law enforcement officer in rural Iowa. We get the day to day routine of life in a small town, the jealousy between and within law enforcement agencies, some of the boredom punctuated by moments of terror of the job. This is a good solid police procedural series set far away from the large cities.
