No, there is not a mistake in the title of the book; the apostrophe really is in the correct place. The book is named after John Dantes, the prime suspect in a vicious bombing campaign in Los Angeles. There is only one problem ; Dantes is already in jail. Intellectually brilliant, Dantes is also insane, and so Dr. Sylvia Strange is summoned to break into his mind and bring the bombing to an end. However, as an enormous bomb nears detonation, her control over Dantes is starting to slip away.

Since this novel draws heavily on Dante and his INFERNO, there is a patent literary theme running throughout the book. Lovett includes quotes from the INFERNO at the beginning of chapters, in addition to using them as key parts of the plot. She also uses complicated language and some of the concepts and ideas based around the different visions of Los Angeles mean that the novel requires slow, detailed reading.

Lovett also often switches viewpoints and whilst the narrative always remains in the third person, the change from Dantes to Strange to Sweetheart and to others can easily become confusing. Nevertheless, this is not to say that it is a bad book. In fact, DANTES' INFERNO makes very good reading. Lovett has succeeded in creating an interesting cast of characters that she will no doubt be able to develop further in future novels.

Detailed and intricate, DANTES' INFERNO may prove too complicated for some people. However, suspense fans will find all the usual elements that make up a complex, but exciting thriller.
