Overmountain Press has published a bevy of fine southern mysteries under its Silver Dagger imprint. Silver Dagger's October release was another debut novel, this time by Texan Carolyn Rogers. HOME IS WHERE THE MURDER IS features San Antonio policewoman Rachael Grant who is recuperating from a gunshot wound at her family's guest ranch in Saddle Gap, Texas.

Her first day home is memorable: Kate's grandfather announces he's sold the Tumbleweed Ranch to Howdy-Doody look-alike Stanley Fletcher. Her second day home is even more memorable when Granddad announces he's married the ranch cook, Carmita, only hours after Fletcher's body is found trussed up like a dead deer on the porch of the Tumbleweed lodge. Kate can't help investigating the murder, but the town sheriff and the special investigator sent in by the state are none too happy to have her snooping around. They assign deputy Nick Rittenour to watch Kate day and night.

Kate doesn't mind the company -- especially at night -- since she's deeply attracted to the handsome young cop. Unfortunately, ex-husband Marshall is still hanging around town, as is Kate's former girlfriend and Marshall's lover, Pamela Pianka. Complicating matters is a second death, this one touching home even more than the first. Between physical therapy for her wounded knee and searching for the Saddle Gap murderer, Kate has little time for rest and relaxation. In the few spare minutes she does have to herself, she worries about the fate of the Tumbleweed Ranch, not to mention her own uncertain future.

Readers who enjoy the Texas-style humor of Paula Boyd will take to this book like a duck to water. Rogers has done everything right in this story. The pacing, dialogue, characterization, and setting are perfect, to say nothing of the intriguing plot. HOME IS WHERE THE MURDER IS was a real pleasure to read.
