Conspiracy theories are very popular, and just as popular are the notions of secret societies that wield power over the world. Taylor Caldwell was a firm believer in secret cabals of industrialists and bankers who controlled world events for profit.

She explored this theme thoroughly in books like Captains and the Kings, Never Victorious Never Defeated, and Testimony of Two Men. Robert Ludlum picked up the secret society theme with his books The Chancellor Manuscript and The Matarese Circle. It was the basis for the controversial bestseller Holy Blood Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln. The successful television series The X-Files was completely rooted in it. It is a fascinating subject, and will most likely continue to be mined by writers endlessly in the future.

Alexandra Robbins undertakes to "expose" the Yale secret society of Skull and Bones in this book. Skull and Bones has been rumored to be behind every major world event since its inception; the connections of the Bush political dynasty to Skull and Bones has made its way into the news on more than one occasion. The book includes at least 11 pages of bibliography and text sources which seems an awful lot for 206 pages of text. Robbins is nothing if not thorough.

Unfortunately, the book answers no real questions anyone might have about Skull and Bones and its alleged power and influence. The book is primarily a history of the society, and by extension, Yale University. It neither confirms nor denies any rumors or accusations.

Ultimately, therefore, the book is a disappointment. And since it is a secret society, what really goes on behind the closed doors of the Tomb remains unknown -- the only way to know is if someone tells you what really goes on, and there is no way to confirm or refute this information.

Undoubtedly, it is the Bush connection to Skull and Bones that got this book published, but alas, Skull and Bones cannot be linked (and Robbins doesn't try) to the mess of the 2000 presidential election. Now, THAT would be a book.
