Rachel Whitman is a woman with everything, including a six-year old son, Dylan. The only problem is that Dylan has learning disabilities. Rachel cannot accept that her son is less than perfect, and eventually becomes obsessed by a medical process that claims to turn slow children into geniuses. Should she and her husband risk their fortune on this experimental process? What they don't know is that the costs of the operation are a lot more than financial.

GRAY MATTER is a fast and furious thriller that can easily take its place on the shelves amongst the likes of Michael Palmer and Robin Cook. Braver has succeeded in creating a novel that will play on the minds of parents across the world, making them wonder if they could ever enhance their child.

Although this is a thriller, Braver spends a great deal of time with the main characters of Rachel Whitman and her husband, Martin. He shows all their agonies and musings and whilst this is interesting and makes the characters more rounded, at one point, Rachel's constant breast-beating and guilt started to become irritating and unnecessary.

The denouement is swift and Braver still finds some surprises to trick the reader, making what is ultimately a shocking, yet satisfying conclusion as he neatly ties up the loose ends. In a market crowded with medical thrillers, GRAY MATTER is one of the better ones. Well written and frightening, it will not disappoint.
