Mischief Night seemed like a great idea. It would provide safe Halloween thrills for kids, the different cliques of local high-school students would learn to work together to help put it on, and it would raise money for a much-needed teen center. So, even though Lindy Haggerty had been looking forward to a little rest, she agreed to act as co-coordinator for the event. By the end of the first day on the job it’s clear that her friend, Mary Elizabeth, did not ask for her help just for Lindy’s organizational skills. Something is very wrong in their quiet little village and Mary Elizabeth is hoping that Lindy’s investigative skills will help clear things up before disaster strikes.

The problems are many. The two factions of the high school volunteers are not working together. A local sect is threatening to picket Mischief Night because they believe that anything that celebrates Halloween is a form of devil worship. There are rumors of drug dealing in the area. An unbalanced young woman has not only returned to the town, but has managed to get a place on the committee. Then there are a series of pranks based on the seven deadly sins and aimed at committee members. These “pranks” are not just harmless jokes, they are potentially lethal. There is more than enough trouble even before Lindy finds the first body…

People who enjoy theater mysteries will love this one. Readers get an insider’s view of the production. The methods used by one of the teachers as she directs some of the high school students in their production of The Crucible are fascinating. The details of production, from costumes to lighting to timing, are shown in enough detail to interest the reader and support the story. The details never overwhelm the narrative. This mystery moves right along, the characters are likable and the protagonist is admirable, and the puzzle is pretty strong. All in all, a very enjoyable read. Recommended for mystery-readers who like cozies.
