Bob Dillon (yes, he's had all the jokes) is a pest exterminator with a big ambition. His dream is to breed a strain of assassin bugs which will be an environmentally friendly way of killing cockroaches and silverfish and other bug pests unfriendly to humans. Unfortunately, he also has to work for a living. When he's sacked from his job with Bug-Off, for refusing to use a high dose of poisonous pesticide, he has to do something to make ends meet while he's testing out his special bugs. He answers an ad in the newspaper for a "Professional Exterminator" for a one-off job paying $50,000. What he doesn't realize is that the pest to be exterminated has two legs rather than six. The ad is a coded message for a hitman. This sets in train a hilarious sequence of events involving a motley array of professional hitmen, the CIA, assorted baddies, and a supporting cast of several thousand cockroaches. Somehow, hapless Bob Dillon gets a reputation as "The Exterminator". The results are indescribable.

This is a very funny book. Bob is a wonderful character who just keeps getting involved in mayhem. Weird things just happen around him, and he just takes them in his stride. He's the type you can't stay mad at for long, and, if he'd only get rid of those bugs of his, you'd want to mother him. Bill Fitzhugh manages to weave together several outrageous strands in the lives of some very odd characters. It would make a great movie - 'Reservoir Bugs' perhaps. The only problem I had with Pest Control was that it made me itch. Some of the details about insects and pests are a tad hard to take if you're not a bug person. And after reading Pest Control, I'm definitely not a bug person.
