London PI Saz Martin is hired by a very worried John Clark to investigate the disappearance of a friend - a girl he knows nothing about, not even her name - to whom he's trustingly lent £16,000. The £16,000 redundancy money he and his wife are going to use to pay off their mortgage. Saz is rather dubious about taking the case but, well, you can't be too choosy when you're on the Enterprise Allowance Scheme and clients aren't exactly falling over themselves to hire you. Meanwhile, stand up comic Maggie is recounting the tale of her relationship with the "girl with the Kelly McGillis body". As can be expected, the two stories become intertwined.

This book is full of wit, and sex, and sparkle. However, there's also a throbbing atmosphere of violence and impending doom, which you can never forget, making it a tense read despite the fun. The pacing is excellent. Saz's investigation and Maggie's relationship take roughly alternate chapters and nicely balance each other out. The two different voices work really well and left me alternately upbeat and uneasy. I liked the character of Saz, and wanted to find out more about her. I enjoyed the way she just gets on with things because it makes sense. She’s a risk taker but also quick thinking and levelheaded.

The plot is cleverly constructed. I thought I knew what was going to happen but the ending surprised me and stayed with me after I finished the book. This is the first in the Saz Martin series and I shall definitely be reading more of them, and soon.
