If you have never before believed in the true existence of evil, read this novel. From the prologue-- "But he wasn't laughing now. Every cell in his body was enraptured by the sight of the burning house. The flames were rising, seducing, devouring, traveling up the walls, bursting through the roof vents, caressing the shingles with hungry, grasping fingers. ... It was glorious. Purifying. A living, breathing, all devouring beast that owed its life to him."

What do you do when your father, a highly accomplished criminal defense attorney who fails to secure the release, on appeal, of a serial arsonist and murderer, is violently attacked by the man's family? Then you discover that not only is your father, Raymond Lawless, under attack, but so are his children, you and your brother. If you are Jane Lawless, you search out the reasons, the motives that drive the family of Bobby Alto. But then come the messages, mysterious, enigmatic, unsettling. Tarot cards.

Ellen Hart, in her award-winning Jane Lawless series has explored many facets of human existence and here is yet another. There are many twists in this well-written novel and it enhances Hart's reputation as a fine stylist who has an exceptionally perceptive eye for the foibles of humanity. She is able to take some of the most bizarre conditions and aberrations of the human species and mix them together in a way that compels us to continue reading even when some of those aberrations are far from our own experience. The characters are strong and believable.

The pace is excellent. Immaculate Midnight is a fine novel in every respect, from its handsome, evocative cover, to its final satisfying end.
