Inspector Edmund Defont has a number of strange cases concerning the deaths of young women on his hands. He can find no connection between the victims.

Meanwhile at the convent, Dr. Curvise, who was also a priest, was called to an emergency. The young priest David Proust was seemingly in a coma with 102 fever and low blood pressure and was having a hard time breathing. The doctor ordered oxygen to be administered, and sulfa injected. The young priest was fighting for his life and at the same time wanting to lose it. After four days he regained consciousness . Monsignor Meric had been advised daily on his progress and was pleased at the news.

David, however, was not convinced he should have survived. The young priest had been tormented by his dreams. They always centered around a young girl who wanted him and he would take her in a sensual dream sequence, forbidden to him by his belief in the Church. If that were not bad enough the girl would be murdered in a way he seemed to know in his dream. As the girls bodies were found the dreams haunted him more and more. Upon his confession about the dreams it was decided to send him to the Institut. There he would receive the care he needed.

Det. Defont's investigation led him to The Institut where every effort was made to keep him from hearing David's story.

The tortures and suffering felt by the unfortunates who were sent to the Institute and chained to the wall, all in the name of justice.

Well, this reader prefers cozy mysteries and I found this book very hard to read. Readers who prefer the noir mystery will enjoy this book however. There are so many twists and turns in the story line, and in the characters that will keep one turning the pages to see what will be on the next one.

I am sure there are things I have missed leading to a very surprising finish. My apologies to the author if I have not given him justice with this review.
