The Mullens are towners of Montauk: grandfather, Mackin Reid; father John Samuel; and sons Jack and Peter.

Jack is in law school and is a summer intern at a prestigious New York law firm. John is retired from construction. Peter parks cars in Montauk at the exclusive home , The Beach House, of millionaire, Barry Neubauer.

On the morning after the Neubauer's party opening the Hampton social season Peter is found dead on the Neubauer's beach.

The police rule it an accident/suicide. Jack refuses to believe the verdict since Peter grew up on the water and since his body was brutally beaten. An autopsy shows that he was dead before he was in the surf and that he sustained injuries not consistent with battering by the surf. But the police still refuse to change their verdict.

Jack finds a large balance in Peter's bank account, not consistent with his lack of employment. He sets out to find its source.

With a group of his friends in town Jack determines to prove his belief that Peter was murdered. They are threatened with bodily harm to prevent their investigation. The powerful men behind the threats escape the consequences of their acts.

It is up to Jack and his hometown friends to exact revenge for Peter in their own way.

The book is a fast read with very short chapters which make the story move rapidly. The plot is well constructed with many characters, though none of them are fully developed. The setting of the Hamptons with its wealthy summer residents and their way of life and influence on the community is well defined.

There is money, sex, corruption, abuse of power, betrayal, revenge and the bonds of friendship; all brought together to make an enjoyable but forgettable book.
