Musher Jessie Arnold is rebuilding her burned cabin and hopes to have it done before the long Alaskan winter sets in, but a skeleton is uncovered in the basement excavation. Along with the dead body, a delicate butterfly pendant is also discovered. Twenty years earlier, several women had been murdered by a serial killer. One of them had been wearing a necklace similar to that found.

It is determined that the skeleton is that of an old man, in fact, he was the previous owner of the site on which Jesse's cabin stood before the fire and on which the new, larger version will sit. Jesse had lost all the papers pertaining to the sale in the fire but she remembers some bits and pieces.

Meanwhile, other women are disappearing, but Robert Hansen, Alaska's famous serial killer, can not be responsible. This must be the work of a copycat. Jessie doesn't let the new murders deter her. She keeps running the dogs and helping to build the cabin. There are some fascinating scenes describing how a modern log cabin is built and how the dogs are kept in training during the off season.

Jessie also has to modify her desire for independence when her friends fear for her safety. Hansen's signature was a single rose in a bud vase; three have been left for Jessie on successive days. She finally accepts help from a fellow musher who has come up from the lower 48 to possibly settle in Alaska, and perhaps, we will see a new relationship in the next book.

Sue Henry is not a native Alaskan, but she loves the land and people. And it shows. This is the 9th in the series which started with Murder on the Iditarod Trail. Each book describes a different facet of life in Alaska and a different time in the life of a musher.
