In the 14 years since Peter Decker first met Rina Lazarus, ( The Ritual Bath), they have grown and aged, as do real people. Rina's boys are young men, going to school in New York, and and Peter's daughter is also a member of the Los Angeles police department. Peter has found his real mother, and Rina and Peter have a young daughter, Hannah.

One night, Peter receives a telephone call from his half-brother in New York. Jonathan's wife's brother, Ephraim Lieber, is found murdered in a hotel room and his 15 year old niece has disappeared. Lieutenant Decker takes some time off from the LAPD and goes, with his wife and daughter, to New York. When he gets there, he is stonewalled by the father of the missing child, the NYPD, and the police chief of the upstate New York town where the ultra-orthodox Lieber live.

Decker persists in his investigation despite the lack of cooperation from all concerned. Ephraim's murder appears to be the work of Chris Donatti, a near psychotic mob connected killer with whom Peter has had a strange shared history. Peter goes to see Chris, and determines that he may be guilty of many things, but he has not committed this crime nor has he kidnapped Shaynda, the missing girl.

Stone Kiss is all Peter...and Chris, who, slimy, sleazy character that he is, steals the book. Kellerman also gets some licks in about the duplicity of the ultra-orthodox., Jews in this case but, by extension, (and newspaper headlines) of any religious group. She also explores the different kinds of relationships such as those between Peter and Rina and their children and step children, Peter and his half-brother and his "real" (adoptive) brother, Chris and Terry, Chris and Peter. This is one of the strongest entries in this long series.
