Iain Hogan is a journalist who takes a job with his old mentor, working on the new Isle of Wight paper, the 'Wight Evening Star'. His stint there has only just begun when a girl is involved in a fall from a cliff on the island. Although the fall is not fatal, the girl falls into a coma and Hogan attempts to find out who she is. However, his own life is swiftly endangered.

Never having visited the Isle of Wight, I found it slightly hard to imagine how it could be the setting for a good thriller, but Rennick swiftly showed me, as did the real life murder of a girl there. Rennick slips in small historical elements and tries to tell the reader as much as possible about the locales, so that the world he creates can easily be visualised. In Rennick's novel, there is a lot more crime on Wight than one might imagine.

The pace is fast and the ideas contained within are interesting, although it must be said that the denouement, with its twist, will be expected by the most experienced of thriller readers. However, the motivation of the character is well-explained and the reader must bear in mind that in this novel, appearances can indeed be deceptive.

Overall, this is a well-crafted read and as Rennick is intending to continue his writing career, I look forward to reading his next novel.
