Rachel Porter, ex New York actress, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agent, and troublemaker, has been assigned to Tennessee. The daughter of one of the good ole boys living on Reelfoot Lake hints to Rachel that her daddy has been importing rabid coons into the area for other good ole boys to hunt. She goes to visit Woody Hardy and finds some paddlefish roe. She goes back to her office and tells her boss, Charlie Hickock, who had been her superior in her first posting in New Orleans, that she suspected Woody of illegally fishing the lake for paddlefish, a protected species whose roe is often substituted for the more expensive Russian caviar.

Rachel of course, won't let up, but she goes home, where her best friend, transvestite Terri Tune, greets her at the door with a cold drink (He sold his New Orleans club, Boy Toy and is now one of the designers of Yarmulke Schlemmer, who make must have clothing for the dogs of the elite.) Terri came for a visit and has stayed to remodel Porter's apartment. They go downstairs to dinner with the owner of the building, Vincent Margulies, ex-porno filmmaker, ex topless bar owner, ex-wrestler, who now has a wrestling school and is teaching Rachel some moves she can use for self-defense. Gena, a local blues singer, joins them for dinner.

As usual, Speart blends humor into her story. Rachel puts herself in jeopardy, but she does have a gun and Vincent has taught her some basic moves. She is passionate about her job. She failed as an actress and she's not going to fail as a fed. But we have Terri and Vincent for comic relief, and Rachel's love life for diversion. This is the fifth in the series, each set in a different part of the US. It's a series I didn't think I'd like. I was wrong
