2nd in the Talba Wallis series. PI's frequently have to tell clients that their spouses or lovers are cheating on them, but Talba finds that it's a little harder when the client is also a friend. And she's distressed to learn that Babalu Maya died shortly after receiving Talba's report, an apparent suicide. But she has trouble believing in that suicide, so, although she's surprised when Babalu's cheating fiancÈ hires her to investigate what he insists was murder, she's happy to go along. The search into Babalu's past for possible motives for murder forces Talba and her boss, Eddie Valentino, to confront some very powerful people with some very potent secrets to protect and they may need all of their combined resourcefulness just to stay alive.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I think this one is even better. It's a fast-paced story with both plenty of humour and plenty of suspense. One of the best parts of the book is the relationship between Talba, a left-leaning 20-something African-American female computer whiz and poet, and Eddie, a right-leaning 50-something white male ex-cop. Smith does a very good job of bringing both characters vividly to life. The other characters, especially Talba's and Eddie's friends and family, are also well-drawn and believable. This was a fun read and I'll be watching for more in this series.
