Joe Pickett earns $28,000 as game warden of Twelve Sleep County, Wyoming. He, along with his pregnant wife and 2 daughters live in a state supplied two bedroom cottage, which seemed palatial when his predecessor and mentor, Vern Dunnegan, lived there, but seems cramped and mean now. His older daughter would like a live pet, but has to make do with a stuffed cuddly because coyotes killed and ate her puppy and her kitten.

Joe would like to give his family more, but he is everyman, an honest, hard-working, incorruptible person. Perhaps a bit of a schlemiel...he has, in the past, given the governor of Wyoming a ticket, and, in the opening pages of this book, has had his gun taken away by a poacher. When this poacher is found dead on Joe's woodpile, holding an empty cooler containing some animal droppings, things start to pop. Vern offers Joe a job with one of the companies trying to build a pipeline through the county, but Joe really doesn't want to work for those who will change his way of life.

This is a non-stop thriller. It's hard to figure out who the good guys are. Box shows us both sides of several emotional issues. Should we limit hunting to those who subsist on the meat of the animals they kill or should we allow "sport" hunting so that some people can earn a living helping others to prove their manhood by killing for the sake of killing. Guns can kill people but they can also keep people alive. Is a pipeline more important than an endangered species? Do we have the right to eliminate whole groups of animals so we can drive bigger cars? Open Season is a remarkable first novel
