Benjamin Iain Hogan, 40 something, separated from his wife and children, is on his way down from his high profile job as anchor on a television news program. He's taken a job as reporter on a new daily newspaper on the Isle of Wight. The editor of the Wight Evening Star is an old acquaintance and has convinced Hogan to try to reclaim his life.

A critically injured young girl is found at the base of a cliff. Her identity is unknown and she is in a coma. Emma Thomas, acting Detective Constable, fast track university graduate on the local police force, seduces Hogan and feeds him clues which he cobbles into stories for the newspaper, but Iain feels something is wrong.

When an older detective is taken off the case because he is friendly with the family of one of the suspects, he also starts feeding clues to Hogan, who follows them up and realizes that Detective Sergeant Dudfield may know more than he lets on. An accident leaves the reporter car-less and the editor teams him up with a young intern, who becomes a great help in Iain's search for the truth.

Rennick has developed several very good characters in this first novel, but the story could be transported to any coastal region of England. The Isle of Wight is only an incidental location. However, it is a fast paced and intriguing story and well worth reading. I await Rennick's second novel, because Hogan is an interesting character.
