Ray Atlee is a professor of law at the University of Viriginia. His father is Judge Atlee, now an old sick man who has retired from the bench and is living in Clanton, Mississippi. Knowing that he is soon going to die, the Judge calls both of his sons back home to discuss the details of his estate. Not wanting to go, but without a choice, Ray returns, but the meeting does not take place. His father dies too soon, leaving a shocking secret, known only to Ray - but perhaps also to someone else.

Whether or not you agree about the quality of Grisham's writing, it is undeniable that he has always been able to write an enjoyable thriller. 'The Summons' is no exception and as the book progresses, Grisham creates an exciting and interesting tale. For some, the ending will come as a surprise, but for those mystery readers who are accustomed to twists up to the very last page, they are certain to have an inkling about what happens.

The pace is rather leisurely and although there is never any real sense of excitement, the book is still fun to read. Grisham made his name writing legal thrillers, although in recent years, he has exchanged these for more mainstream thrillers with only a dash of legal proceedings. 'The Summons' is another example of this, as there is never any courtroom drama. Some may want a return to books such as 'A Time To Kill', but in 'The Summons', Grisham has created another enjoyable tale that will no doubt top the charts for some time to come.
