Tamara, a black single mother, is a private investigator. She is hired by the Desmonds, a wealthy black family, to find their missing teenage daughter Gabriella. Tamara's search takes her to Atlantic City where she must look behind the glamor of the casinos and into the world of runaways who live their lives under the boardwalks and in dark alleys.

Gabriella's roommate is killed with no suspects. There is another murder of another of Gabriella's friends. There is a suspicion that there is a serial killer at large.

Tamara's investigations reveal a ring which supplies teenagers to powerful people and drugs. This places her in danger. She is rescued from harm by Basil Dupre, a mysterious man who always seems to turn up when Tamara is in danger. He is there now to try to find a daughter he didn't know existed and who may be a victim of the prostitution ring.

Tamara is pulled off the case by Gabriella's mother but she continues to try to save Gabriella who s alone and pregnant. In the course of her endeavors Tamara uncovers dark secrets in the Desmond family.

Tamara Hayle is a welcome addition to the ranks of female private investigators. She is tough, fearless but has a sympathetic heart, caring for the plight of the runaways.

This is a fast moving, suspenseful story; well-plotted with a well developed cast of characters: some the reader will hate and some the reader will be sympathetic with. The picture of Atlantic City is vivid contrasting the casinos with their glamor and their attraction for gambling and unsavory characters lurking behind the glitz with the poor and abandoned teenagers who are trying to survive.
