'Roses Are Red', Patterson's previous novel ended on a shocking cliffhanger, regarding the identity of the Mastermind, the cunning killer whom Alex Cross was tracking. This novel, as the title suggests, is a direct continuation, dealing with the Mastermind's attacks on Alex and at the same time, Alex's investigation into a string of murders, which could be the work of vampires, role-players or a cult.

With 'Violets Are Blue', Patterson enters into his goriest territory yet, as bodies are drained of blood and hung upside down. He sends Cross and the FBI on a journey across America, visiting city after city but always one step behind the murderers. As always, Patterson continues to use his very short chapters, giving the book a frantic pace.

My main complaint regarding 'Roses Are Red' was the identity of the Mastermind, which seemed totally unbelievable. Here, Patterson gives the character motivation and he also returns to characters and events in previous books to make the Mastermind more credible. If you have not read 'Roses Are Red', Patterson is careful not to name the Mastermind, meaning that 'Violets Are Blue' can also be read as a standalone novel, although having knowledge of the previous Alex Cross books would be a great advantage.

Once again, Patterson has produced a very enjoyable page-turner and again provides an ending that opens more up more possibilities for the Alex Cross series. Full of twists, turns and surprises, this is another example of Patterson's talents. Some may want a meatier book, with more analysis and consideration of motive by the characters, but for those who are happy with a Hollywood-style murder and gore-fest, Patterson does not disappoint.
