On the surface this is a tale about a young legal secretary, who had dreams of werewolves, until, one full moon, she morphed and killed someone. Annie Engle had led a blameless life. She was an orphan, raised by her grandmother. Her only tie with the past was her grandmother's next door neighbor, who was suffering from dementia in a nursing home, and whom she visited frequently.

Dr Marco Potenza, a psychiatrist, an expert in Lycanthropic Metamorphic Disorder, also a werewolf. His family has specialized in diseases of the mind since before psychiatry was a recognized discipline. Like the Rothschilds, the Potenza family has covered the western world, but instead of banks and philanthropy, they open clinics to attempt to control the werewolves during the time fo the full moon. Marco restrains his patients in the former speakeasy hidden in the basement of the Chelsea Hotel, and drugs them with Ketamine (Special K) during the time of the full moon. His offices and home are in the penthouse.

Jim Valiente has been in India, running with a pack of free werewolves for the last few years. Something has brought him back to the city, but he doesn't quite know what, until, during Annie's second transformation, they meet. He knows he must save her from the Potenza therapy, which can kill her.
